MGCS News: 9 Ways to Make Your Home More Energy Efficient
The house is a system. You save money and improve performance when you take cost-effective measures that reduce building loads, and then install systems and appliances that are the right size to meet the reduced loads. In general, over-sizing worsens performance and increases costs.
- Make sure your walls and attic are well insulated.
- Upgrade or replace windows.
- Plant shade trees and shrubs around your house.
- Replace an older furnace with a high-efficiency system.
- Improve the efficiency of your hot water system..
- Replace incandescent lightbulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs).
- If you buy a new refrigerator, don't leave the old one plugged in.
- Take advantage of new tax incentives to improve your home.
- Schedule an energy audit for more expert advice on your home as a whole.

Cleaning tip of the month
Are your windows driving you crazy? But you don’t have time to get outdoors and wash the outside, do you? Me either. Here’s a magic trick. Fill a spray bottle with vinegar. One that has a good spray. Close the windows. Go outside and spray the windows with the vinegar – coating them well. Wait a couple of minutes and hose off. With a good spray bottle, I'm even able to do the second floor windows.
If you are having problems cleaning all those little holes on your window screens, take them out of the windows and vacuum them with your vacuum’s hose attachment. Next, spray them off with your garden hose. Scrub them down with a brush using a mixture of laundry detergent and warm water. Allow them to air dry and then reinsert into the windows.
Now, go grab some green tea or something and enjoy the view!
