The EPA estimates that we spend as much as 90% of our days in buildings. Is the building that you spend most of your time in LEED certified? Last month, LEED celebrated its 10th anniversary. For a decade, the LEED rating systems have driven the marketplace toward recognizing the central tenet of green building: that our economic, environmental and personal health is dramatically impacted by the places where we live, work, learn, shop, heal, dine and play.
Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED provides building owners and operators a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.
LEED is a voluntary certification program that can be applied to any building type and any building lifecycle phase. It promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in key areas:
- Sustainable Sites
- Water Efficiency
- Energy & Atmosphere
- Materials & Resources
- Indoor Environmental Quality
- Locations & Linkages
- Awareness & Education
- Innovation in Design
- Regional Priority

Safety First
Many of us often do not think safety first when cleaning on our own or cleaning our house. In the janitorial industry we are regulated by OSHA and other regulatory bodies. We must be in compliance with the products, chemicals, and supplies we use. However at home we are not under the microscope of any regulatory agency accept maybe our significant other.
You have probably heard this before, but it is worth repeating: Don't Mix Cleaning Products. They contain various chemicals that can create dangerous chemical reactions if you combine the wrong products. Stick with one product and get the job done. Usually all it takes is a little soaking and some elbow grease.
